Catherine Ford is a British actress, born in Bloomsbury. After her father's departure from her family, she was brought up by her mother, godparents, and grandmother. She suffered from an anxiety disorder that was rooted in words as a young child. Ford began to be interested in acting as a teenager, and she joined the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she would not be a good fit there. Ford then applied for a place in the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. He was later to play frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however at the time she was already making her debut on television in an episode from 1991 from Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". Tate was on television in the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate would also frequently work in theatre and eventually joined the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up comedy, which she began adding to her repertoire in 1996, soon gained the attention of her peers.
